Torii (gate) and the ascent up to the Toshogu shrine, the biggest tourist attraction in Nikko with hundreds of daily visitors

The famous three monkeys of Nikko - hear no evil, speak no evil and see no evil

In Kusatsu-Onsen - a thermal resort on the Japanese romantic road.
There's a large hot spring and a steaming waterfall in the middle of the city centre

In the wooden enclosures, the surplus sulphur is collected so that the water becomes usable for bathing

From Kusatsu you can hike up a wide valley - following the small river where you'll encounter hot water bathing spots and waterfalls
Here you'll find a memorial to 2 German doctors - Dr. Julius Scriba and Dr. Erwin Baelz who though his initiative made possible
the opening of the volcanic springs in Kusatsu-Onsen. He taught European orthodox medicine in Tokyo for 30 years
and his wife was Japanese. As a personal physician to the imperial family, he was the co-founder of modern medicine in Japan
In 1905 he returned home to Germany
